We caught up with the North East regional heat winner of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition Ryan Hepple, 23, from New College, Durham, straight after his victory was announced.

His regional heat took place at Newcastle College on Tuesday 17th January and he was up against seven other colleges.

Here he tells us how it was third time lucky for him!

How did you find the regional heat?

It was very good. I’ve taken part in this competition for the last two years  so it’s a great achievement to have finally won the regional.

What was the most difficult part of today’s competition?

Waiting for the results.

Are you looking forward to the Final?

I am, I’ve never been to the ADEY Professional Heating Solutions Training Centre before.

What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry?

I went to university to do Sport Science but it wasn’t for me. My dad helped me to get an apprenticeship after I did work experience and I’ve not looked back since.

Where are you doing your apprenticeship and what will your employer think of your success so far in the competition?

I’m doing it with Smith and Goodwin Heating Ltd and he’ll be very pleased.

What do you dislike the most about the plumbing and heating industry?

Toilets!

What did you have for breakfast?

I just had fruit.

What’s your favourite movie?

Legend.

What’s your favourite TV show?

I’m watching a lot of Impractical Jokers at the moment.
