Michael Sandercock, 20, from South Devon College won the South West regional heat of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition, which took place at Petroc on Tuesday 31st January 2017.

Apprentices from 12 colleges took part in the third of seven regional heats, which are being held across the country between January and March.

Here he tells us how he didn’t even need to eat breakfast on the day of his victory…

How did you find the regional heat?

It was difficult. It feels good because everyone taking part was a good standard.

What was the most difficult part of today’s competition?

The pipe bending – I don’t tend to do it!

Are you looking forward to the Final?

Definitely, yes.

What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry?

My dad’s friend did it and I helped him for a bit. It was after that experience with him that I decided to do it afterwards.

Where are you doing your apprenticeship and what will your employer think of your success so far in the competition?

Murch and Baker. I think he’ll be happy.

How did you get an apprenticeship?

Through my college.

What do you dislike the most about the plumbing and heating industry?

Getting up in the morning.

What did you have for breakfast?

Nothing.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

I’m not really into music.

What’s your favourite TV show?

Geordie Shore.
