WATCH: WIT Conference is a roaring success

The second annual Women Installers Together (WIT) Conference attracted its biggest gathering yet – as the plumbing industry gathered to celebrate women in the trade.

Stopcocks founder and event organiser Hattie Hasan described the day as an “absolute blast”, as around 150 women travelled to The Building Centre in London on July 4.

Trainees, installers, merchants, manufacturers and trade press gathered to meet and hear from speakers.

Jazz Jones, Polypipe’s Learning and Development Business Partner led a session on Emotional Intelligence for Advanced Relationship Management.

Two time Olympian and six-time World Champion Kayaker Anna Hemmings MBE talked through her own experiences in sport and about keeping going through adversity.

After lunch, organiser Hattie Hasan captured the room with her life story – from being made to learn how to be a housewife and mother to becoming a teacher and then a plumber, and the adversity she faced in the industry.

Event organisers Stopcocks Women Plumbers and partners Polypipe were delighted at the response from both industry and installers.

Hattie Hasan said: “I wouldn’t have believed we could start from nowhere and manage to get so much positive engagement, it’s a very proud moment.

“For the first time we are bringing together as many trainees as we can and introducing them to potential employers and showing that there is a huge interest in taking on the challenge to make this wonderful industry as attractive to women as we can.

“There are many ways women can find a place in plumbing and gas engineering, and the WIT conference aims to celebrate not only what has been done, but also what can be done in the future.”

The event was sponsored by Graham The Plumber’s Merchant, Kier Group, Redrow Homes, Fernox, Impey Showers, Vaillant UK, Calor, Monument Tools, and Base PPE with Brian Hyde Ltd.

Event organiser Mica May, from Stopcocks, said: “To get this level of fantastic support from new and returning sponsors shows there’s a willingness in the industry to facilitate change.”
