WATCH: The Apprentice Diaries

Welcome to our new series of monthly video diaries with Level 2 apprentice Carl Ladd as he takes us on his plumbing journey and shows us what life is like as an apprentice.

Carl, 39, works for Renelec and will be showing us what life is like as an apprentice on a new build site.

He got into plumbing via a labouring role after he severely crushed his hand in an accident two-and-a-half years ago.

Carl said: “I’ve always been very fit and healthy, so when I had the accident I thought my life was over. At the time, my girlfriend’s father and brother were plumbers for Renelec and offered me – after rehab – a job labouring with them.

“A year and half in, I applied and got accepted as an apprentice and I’m still here now.

“I have fun every day. I’m very lucky that the plumber I have now, Will, is one of the best guys I’ve ever met. He has so much time for teaching, his knowledge is unreal and I’d say I’ve found one of my closest friends.

“All day it’s a-laugh-a-minute – but we get stuff done. We have busy days but the fun doesn’t stop, ever.

“I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I remember being sat there on Day One after hurting my hand, thinking ‘who is there to help me?’

“That’s when I decided to set up The Apprentice Foundation.”

Helping apprentices

Carl set up the project in a bid to help connect full-time learners with employers looking for apprentices – which we are, of course, fully behind.

He added: “I feel every single one of the messages I receive – that alone is the drive to make The Apprentice Foundation what I know it can be.

“The people who message me really want to get on in their specific trade – they’re thirsty for it.

“Keep grinding, keep at it. I surround myself with like-minded people to create a good environment around myself – this gives me the push.”
