The search is on for Apprentice of the Year 2016

Do you have what it takes to win?

The search is on for the HIP Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016, which is now open for entries. Up for grabs are some big prizes, including items to the value of £5,000 donated by the platinum sponsor Adey. The gold sponsor Copper Initiative will be providing a pressfit machine worth £2,500 and an iPad, with other prizes being donated by Vaillant, Pegler Yorkshire and Graham Builders Merchant.

Offering a chance for reward and recognition, the 2016 event will see students being assessed on both practical and technical merits. Regular competition judge Tony Kite will be back to oversee proceedings in the regional heats, leading to a grand final.

How does it work?

Each college can put forward one student for the competition. There’s also a UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year which runs alongside the event at the same time, and colleges can also enter one student for that competition too. The student can be working in industry or college based, and must be studying for their NVQ qualifications, and be no older than 24 years of age.

To enter, the students must be able to successfully complete a test paper from a previous year. There is an online application form which must be completed no later than 31st October 2015. If successful, students will be invited with their lecturers to attend one of six regional events around the country where they’ll spend the day competing against other students on practical tasks. Wilo Pumps and Kingspan Environmental will be amongst those providing products to work on for the competition.

The winner of each regional heat – plus the next person who has received the highest score from all six regional heats – will then go forward to the grand final which will be held in March 2016.
