HIP Magazine swaps tool kits for rugby kits

HIP Magazine was delighted to be able to sponsor the New Tredegar Mini’s brand new rugby attire.

Lee Perry, a plumbing lecturer at Coleg Y Cymoedd, helps to train the team and his own daughter is one of the team’s members. Lee annually attends the HIP Meet The Lecturer CPD events which run alongside the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year, where many of his own students have been finalists after successfully winning the Wales regional heat each year.

In return for his continued support of the HIP Magazine events, it was a pleasure to invest in the future of the next generation of rugby players in New Tredegar.

Here Lee reveals what makes the New Tredegar Minis so special.

How long has the team been going?

The New Tredegar Minis were established in 2010, but the current under 9’s (being 8 years old) have only been playing rugby between a year and three years. The team has developed from having 3-4 players only 2 years ago to now having 9/10 and further looking to expand on numbers.

How is the season going so far?

Excellent. It is the first year of contact (tackling) for the team and although it is a big jump from tagging to tackling the team have grabbed the challenge with both hands and are playing some very good rugby. The ball handling skills have been a delight to watch and the tackle area is improving week on week.

Why is it a special team?

The team is made up of 5 girls and 5 boys with all of the children mixing well, being good friends on and off the field. This shows through during matches in the commitment and desire to play for each other.

Each player gives 100% effort every game and they are all a pleasure to train and coach.

The nice thing is, most children didn’t know each other before joining the section as they live in different villages but you could not tell this by seeing them together as it looks as though they have been friends for years.

What does the team think of the new kit?

It is the first time that the children have been kitted out in training clothing supplied by sponsors since they have started rugby. So has you can imagine the children were very excited and when they got to see it for the first time they were really happy as you can see by the photos.

What lies in the future for the team?

To keep progressing, improving and building on what we already have.

We have a rugby touring tournament (Tigers Challenge) booked for next year at Butlins (Minehead), which is a big event with 200 teams already booked on. This will bring a big and exciting challenge to the team.

A big thank you to HIP from the children for providing New Tredegar Under 9’s rugby team with the funding desperately needed to supply the players with some much needed training clothing.

As you can see, the team are a happy, great bunch of kids and it’s kind gestures like this from yourselves that keep the team spirit and grass roots rugby alive.

I personally would like to say a huge thanks to Celia and the team at HIP for allowing the children to present themselves by looking professional during match days and training sessions.

The team are an absolute credit to themselves and family.
