Meet our Wales regional heat winner

Tyler Gibbings-Thomas, 22, from Coleg Y Cymoedd is the winner of the Wales regional heat of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition.

The heat took place at Bridgend College on Thursday 2nd February and 9 competitors took part from across the region.

How did you find the regional heat?

It was good fun and a good learning curve.

What was the most difficult part of today’s competition?

The pressure.

Are you looking forward to the Final?

Yes, although the pressure will be worse!

What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry?

It was different to carpentry which I was doing before, and more challenging at times.

Where are you doing your apprenticeship and what will your employer think of your success so far in the competition?

JDC Plumbing and Heating. He’ll be over the moon I think.

How did you get an apprenticeship?

My employer met me on a carpentry job and two or three weeks later he phoned me up and asked if he could take me on instead.

What do you dislike the most about the plumbing and heating industry?

You can get some horrific jobs, like doing toilets for example.

What did you have for breakfast?

Toast.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran.

What’s your favourite TV show?

Ex on the Beach.
