Tameside students impress at construction event

Plumbing students took part in a competition as part of Tameside College’s annual Pathway to Construction event last month.

A selection of Level 1 and Level 2 students from the college were given the chance to show off their skills. The competition was judged by Jerry Whitely from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), and Claire Eastwood of Monument Tools.

Dominic Harrop, a 16-year-old full-time student, won the Level 1 competition. He said he’d been nervous to start with but had grown in confidence as the morning went on and was happy with his final work.

Laius McGhie, 20, finished third in the Level 1 competition. He said he’d worked hard to get his measurements right and described the competition as a good experience. Jake Robinson finished in second place.

The Level 2 competition was won by Adam Goulthorp. The 19-year-old said he’d been practicing for the competition after finding out he’d be taking part a few weeks earlier. In second place was Jack Garside, 18, and in third was Alan Savil-Lister.

As well as the skills competition, the Pathway to Construction event gave manufacturers and industry bodies the chance to engage with students and lecturers. There was also the opportunity to have a sneak preview of Tameside College’s new £11m construction centre using VR technology.
